Think Silly

"Silly Thing is a multi-media establishment founded by TK in 2000. With its multiple practices include magazine publishing, fashion retail, animation and video production, Silly Thing has raised its profile to be one of the most influential establishments in the creative industry in Asia." via TK's blog

Here is an anniversary video for Silly Thing by Ivan Yu.

They also have their own web-magazine, Think Silly, which I really love. Very highly recommended to look at. Very easy to create a profile, takes only a minute, and then you can look at all of its great content.

Dieter Rams

Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who created very inspirational product designs for Braun. Rams functional and minimal designs have significantly influenced product design forever. If you look at any iMac, iPod or iPhone (created by Jonathon Ive), their designs were all influenced by Rams. (very closely influenced).

Rams' Ten Principles of Good Design
  • Good design is innovative
  • Good design makes a product useful
  • Good design is aesthetic
  • Good design helps us to understand a product
  • Good design is unobtrusive
  • Good design is honest
  • Good design is long-lasting
  • Good design is consequent to the last detail
  • Good design is concerned with the environment
  • Good design is as little design as possible

Johnny Cupcakes, Maestro Knows

In a previous post just about a week ago I talked about Johnny Cupcakes, and today I found another really interesting video about him. Maestro Knows gives you an inside look at Johnny's home, business and inspiration. Take a look at more Levi Maestro's videos too! Another person choosing to work on what he loves (directing and producing videos) on his own terms while making it into a successful enterprise.

In addition to exhibiting internationally in numerous museums and galleries, he has produced logos, album covers, and clothing for clients such as Nike, Stussy, The Cool Kids, and A-TRAK through Struggle Inc. Watch the interview from "The Run Up," available to the public for free for the first time, on Walrus TV."

Current TV

Since being home in MD, I've been watching some nice channels (since I only get basic cable in Richmond). One channel I've been watching is Current Tv, which features interesting music, culture and news stories. Below is a great video of Mos Def in Japan, if you have the time I highly recommend sitting down and watching this. Current TV also has other great videos on their site, so check it out.

Also take a look at: Vanguard, a Current TV documentary series featuring enterprising reports from around the globe. Airing on Wednesdays at 10pm.

Electro Wars

"It is unquestionable that the Electro genre has reached a broader American audience in the last two years. I am determined to document the scene and its participants, show the inner workings of the genre and what it will eventually evolve into...It seems that every other day a new remix is popping up on the blogosphere, how does this affect marketing for other independent artists? Do they welcome the remixes or oppose them? Is music overload possible?..." - Stephen Vasquez, Director

Johnny Cupcakes

Johnny Cupcakes or John Earle, is a young entrepreneur who started his clothing brand from the trunk of his 89' Toyota Camry. Since then his business has grown greatly, to say the least. Check out the video and tour, his trunk show will be coming to Need Supply Co in Richmond on May 6th. Also highly recommended to look at his site and story.

Also check out this insightful video. I like these videos and John Earle's story because they show how hard work, and a dedication to your passion can develop into a viable brand/business. "Don't just play beer pong every night" - sketch out ideas, focus on what you love and your passion will develop into a reality.

WAD

One of my favorite magazines, WAD, (We Are Different) is a French quarterly magazine about urban fashion and culture. The covers are clean, simple and refreshingly creative. Their website exhibit all these qualities as well!

Riverfront Times

My art direction teacher, Tyler Darden, showed us these great covers from Riverfront Times. The Riverfront Times is a St. Louis alternative weekly newspaper. Art director Tom Carlson has created these unique and interesting covers for the paper since 1988, take a look!
