InLight Richmond
Here are a few photos from Friday night at 1708 Gallery's second annual exhibition of outdoor "light-inspired" art. The light-inspired works of art were displayed in gallery windows and on the sides of commercial buildings. While other works could be viewed through video and sound projections, interactive installations and dance and performance art.
"Their ephemeral presence urges us not only to join in the celebration of light but also claim back and animate, in a creative and memorable way, a part of the city otherwise inactive at night." Adelina Vlas
This piece was made by my roommate, Vinita Phonseya, and her interior design group.

Figures
Went to first SOCA (Society of Communication Arts) figure drawing session on Friday, and really enjoyed it. It has been awhile since I've done traditional figure drawing so I thought it would be fun to play around with composition and typography. The typography is incomplete, and I still need to experiment a lot more. Done in ball point pen on bristol.

Andreas Gursky
If you didn't already know - German photographer, Andreas Gursky, does vast landscape color photographs of man-made spaces - industrial buildings, office lobbies, factory assembly lines and interiors of big-box retailers (megastores). Gursky highlights the nature and abstract beauty of symmetry, creating a unique perspective on the concept of space.
The above photograph, 99 Cent II Diptychon, depicts the colorful rows of different branded food in a supermarket. The two-part photograph is the most expensive photograph in the world auctioned for $3.34 million on February 7, 2007.

Richard Carlyon
Last Friday night I attended three of the four exhibitions for Richard Carlyon (1930-2006). A former Virginia Commonwealth University professor who produced an extensive body of work for over 50 years. With four exhibitions at the Anderson Gallery, Reynolds Gallery, 1708 Gallery and Visual Arts Center of Richmond each site offers a unique theme to Carlyon's work.
"Each of the four exhibiting sites will present a portion of Carlyon’s work, arranged thematically, to offer an overview of his development and wide-ranging perspective." - RVA Magazine
Anderson Gallery, "Choice"
Bold linework and a minimal color palette embodies Carlyon's most powerful paintings. Personal favorite is the series of panels with overlapping red and dark gray lines. The red line draws the viewers eye and creates a hierarchy within the composition.
Mock set-up and sculpture piece of Carlyon's art studio. A glimpse into his personal workspace including art books such as Duschamp, rows of old records and audio cassettes, stacks of liquitex and carefully pinned up black and white photographs.
1708 Gallery, "Interval"
Visual Art's Center, "Chance"
A vast array of other work such as collages, sculpture and video show Carlyon's versatility and wide perspective. Many of these works include the layering of wood pieces which are highlighted through the raw construction of nails and metal screws showing through.
Reynold's Gallery, His wife, Eleanor Rufty & early and late paintings

JR
http://www.jr-art.net/
Photographer JR does incredibly extensive and large wall works with his photography. Began his career doing street art, then his "illegal" art became official when Paris Hall wrapped one of its buildings with his photos. With themes such as Portrait of a Generation (portraits of suburban "thugs"), and Women (underlining the dignity of women), JR's work showcases everyday people on ordinary walls, roofs and entire buildings. Creating art in unexpected places opens up personal interpretation.
