MADE

Here is the latest video by MADE, a creative space in Berlin for collective thinking and collaboration between artists, designers and visionaries. The space serves as a platform for the most progressive art and ideas to be exchanged and showcased. This video explains the idea behind MADE from founders, Philip Gaedicke and Nico Zeh, and also features the work of MADE's latest resident, Ebon Heath.

Marcus Kraft

Graphic designer Marcus Kraft has some interesting pieces of work. Most of his portfolio emphasizes art direction and typography, but I thought his personal project, "Wasted Money", was his most interesting piece. With 10 variations in all, I thought it was clever to cut the dollar bills. This idea of cutting into something of value can serve as inspiration for my laser cutting class.

Janine Antoni

Just saw a really great lecture by artist Janine Antoni. All of her work is impressive, to say the least. It was really interesting to hear her process behind her pieces, and her role in making each sculpture. The role of the artist's body is intertwined within the idea of art making, and acts as a basis for the final product/piece.

"Antoni’s work blurs the distinction between performance art and sculpture. Transforming everyday activities such as eating, bathing, and sleeping into ways of making art, Antoni’s primary tool for making sculpture has always been her own body. She has chiseled cubes of lard and chocolate with her teeth, washed away the faces of soap busts made in her own likeness, and used the brainwave signals recorded while she dreamed at night as a pattern for weaving a blanket the following morning." - PBS Art 21

Kanye finally releases his first video "Runaway" for his new album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. As director, Kanye demonstrates his creative vision, and his genius in exposing hip hop to new art forms.

Really interesting documentary on Diplo, music producer and dj. Diplo shares his thoughts on people, culture and traveling - as well as what he would do should he stop making music. It's interesting to see how the dj scene is growing and how involved you have to be, like Diplo said "It's not just about having a record out there. It's about having as many corners of media you can..."

New Era Design Competition

Although I am usually wary of design competitions (for small organizations and businesses), I think for large corporations it's a great way to catapult unknown designers into recognition. If you look at New Era's design competition you can also see it can expand the company's creativity. New Era asked 90 graduates from the most prestigious design schools in Europe to create a unique version of the New Era 59fifty fitted hat. The winner is awarded 10,000 euro to launch his/her career. Take a look at some of the interesting designs students have submitted.

Christina Empedocies

Really enjoying Christina Empedocies' artwork. She creates depth on her paintings and drawings by playing with perspective and light. The subject matter seems to break away from the canvas/paper. Her sculptural works mimic the same idea, layering paper to create a 3d or seemingly 3d shape.

Bansky & Simpsons

Bansky's take on the Simpsons intro, relating to how 20th Century Fox outsources it's animation to South Korea.

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord's latest video "Evil Boy". The video is sooo ridiculous, it's awesome.

The background story is:

So, the story behind this video and song (or part of the story -- there's so much going on!) is that this kid was being coerced into a form of ritual circumcision by his community. It's culturally mandatory within his ethnic group, so much so that if you are a young man and you do not participate, you are completely ostracized. It's hardcore.

The thinking, and this is communicated pretty bluntly to the young men, is that if you don't participate, you're gay. You're effeminate. You're not a real man. You never mature from being a boy to being a man.

The kid is hetero. And he struggled with all of this in real life: with what it meant for his personal and cultural identity. And he came to a point where he was like, you know what? Fuck you all. The fact that I won't consent to having my penis sliced with an unsterilized knife, out in the bush, and risk infection or worse-- that doesn't mean "I'm gay," as you say. If that's what being a man is, fuck it, I don't want to be a man. I'll be an "evil boy for life." But, yeah, I am a real man, even if I don't participate in this tradition which I now reject, at the risk of being totally ostracized from my community.

You might have chosen different lyrics, but dude, it's not our story or our culture or our world experience at all.

It's his.
